If you’re fluent in English and Spanish, you already have a valuable skill. This certificate trains you to use it professionally, interpreting spoken conversations and translating written documents accurately in health care, legal, education and community settings.

What you’ll learn

  • Consecutive, simultaneous and sight interpretation
  • Medical terminology and health care interpreting
  • Legal and court interpreting fundamentals
  • Written translation and translation technology
  • Ethics, confidentiality and cultural mediation

Why Palmetto Ridge

The full program runs online through RidgeLearn, with live practice sessions in small groups so you get real-time feedback on your interpreting. You’ll complete a supervised practicum with Lowcountry Regional Medical Center’s language services team or a community organization. Instructor Alejandra is a nationally certified medical interpreter, and instructor Fernando has worked as a court interpreter for more than a decade. The program prepares you to pursue national medical interpreter certification. Students who need to strengthen their skills first can take advanced Spanish courses within our Associate in Arts.
