Palmetto Ridge Junior College has launched the Hawks Promise Scholarship, which covers full tuition and required fees for recent high school graduates from the Lowcountry whose families earn less than $60,000 a year.
The scholarship is a “last-dollar” award, meaning it fills the gap after federal Pell Grants and state aid are applied. Because many students will also qualify for Pell, Hawks Promise recipients can often use those grant dollars for books, transportation, and living expenses.
Too many talented young people in our region believe college is not for them because of cost. Hawks Promise says, clearly and simply: you belong here, and you can afford it.
— Dr. Renée Okafor-Bennett, President
Who is eligible
Students must graduate from a high school, home school program, or GED program in the college’s service area within the past two years, complete the FAFSA, and enroll in at least six credit hours per term. Recipients also meet with a success coach twice each semester and complete a short community service project. Undocumented students and DACA recipients may qualify through a state aid alternative application.
The scholarship is funded by the Palmetto Ridge Foundation with support from local businesses, alumni, and the Cypress Landing community.
The Financial Aid Office hosts free FAFSA Fridays help sessions throughout the fall in Old Main. The FAFSA priority deadline for Hawks Promise consideration is December 1.
