Dr. Jamal Mitchell works across the college to make sure every student, employee, and visitor experiences Palmetto Ridge as a place where they belong. His portfolio includes the Belonging Center, accessibility partnerships, cultural heritage programming, and employee development.

A historian by training, Dr. Mitchell has helped the college tell its own story honestly, from its 1894 founding as a school for Black teachers to its 1967 merger as one of the first integrated junior colleges in South Carolina. He co-chairs the Heritage Center advisory board and helped launch the LGBTQ+ Resource Network and the Disability Inclusion Council. He is a devoted jazz fan and hosts a monthly vinyl listening night in the Learning Commons.
